My Swedish Summer (Fit Travel Series Part II)

Exploring beautiful Stockholm

Welcome to My Swedish Summer – Part 2 of the Fit Travel Series here at HTT&T.

This week I’m going to talk a little bit about some challenges of travel and also do a Fit Travel diary update.

One of the biggest things I struggle with when traveling is back pain. From the minute we head off on those long international flights where we are sitting for long periods of time to one or two weeks later when I can really feel that I haven’t been attending my usual one hour yoga classes, back pain can be a real downer when traveling for extended periods of time.

It usually helps somewhat to do yoga stretches from the apartment or hotel room, and try to get outside for morning walks and runs as much as possible to get into a routine. We also stay very active with all the walking we do when sightseeing, and while this has many benefits, sometimes walking all day can exacerbate the issue, as there is a fine line that needs to be balanced between resting and staying active.

So, what have I been doing to help the back pain? Yoga poses such as cat and dog stretches, happy baby, kneeling lunge, cow face (also known as hero), bound angle, standing forward fold, sitting forward fold, reclining spinal twist, pigeon, frog, and more…

My yoga teacher recently published this post on Spinal Health which I would highly recommend.

I persevered with my goal of getting outdoors each day, as back pain is one of those things that can get worse if you stop being active, and I find for me staying active definitely helps.

  1. Sounds like you've definitely stayed active! My back gets all twisted and out of sorts also. I actually go to a chiropractor once a month to keep me in-line. I do also have a yoga for back DVD, but haven't done that in a while. We'll see how my back handles our next couple weeks, as we'll be traveling as well! I hope that I'm able to be half as active as you've been!! Happy Summer. Stopping by from the MBC FB page. 🙂

  2. I enjoy all of your travel photos. Good idea about doing yoga.
I also wanted to let you know that I mentioned your blog in our Liebster Award post on our blog today at http://runningfifty.com/2015/07/31/liebster-award/.
    Happy Friday!
