A weekend away in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, USA.
Over the weekend I stayed in the town of Truth or Consequences for my “babymoon” – a yoga and meditation retreat (see previous post: Breathe New Life Into Your Life). As well as enjoying a weekend of rest, relaxation, yoga, and meditation, I took lots of colourful photos and learned about the history of the town, both things of which I would love to share with you here.
Some of my favourites to photograph: the rainbow buildings.
A Brief History of Truth or Consequences (formerly known as Hot Springs):
For hundreds of years Native Americans met at the mineral hot springs that flowed naturally from the ground where T or C is located (along the bank of the Rio Grande).
“Truth or Consequences” was the name of a TV show, and in late 1949 the host Ralph Edwards made an announcement that he wanted a city to change its name to “Truth or Consequences” to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the show. The host promised that the anniversary show would be broadcast from the chosen city and that the city would gain nationwide publicity. The town of Hot Springs won, and the rest, as they say, is history!
The final decision regarding the name change was up to the residents of the town, so they took a formal vote in March of 1950. The town’s name was changed to Truth or Consequences (T or C) and April 1st marked the T or C Fiesta, with 10,000 people in attendance.
The change-of-name agreement was meant to be for one year, however, the host attended the Fiesta for fifty years!! (1950-2000). The town voted twice more on the name and each time the residents chose to keep it.
The Fiesta is now held on the first weekend of May each year, and “Ralph Edwards’ Day” is held on 1st April. The Fiesta includes a golf tournament, rodeo, and parade.
